Inclusive Reason: The Evolution of the Meaning of Sin and Reward in the History of Human Consciousness

In the religious life of modern society, said sin And present it often sounds so familiar, it even becomes daily vocabulary in advice, lectures, preaching, and even digital platform content. However, behind this familiarity, there is rarely any in-depth reflection on how the meaning of these two concepts was formed, changed and underwent historical, cultural and theological transformation.

We more often treat them as ready-made moral categories: sin = wrong, merit = right. In fact, etymologically, philosophically and anthropologically, this concept has a much more complex meaning journey. It is not only about God’s law, but also the way humans understand themselves, reality, and their spiritual relationship with the Transcendent.

This article tries to trace the transformation of the meaning of sin and reward: from Sanskrit linguistic roots, metaphorical shifts in the Indonesian Islamic tradition, to spiritual commodification in the modern era.

Sin as an “Existential Flaw”, Not a Moral Crime

Etymologically, the word sin comes from Sanskrit doshaswhich means “defect”, “flaw”, “damage”, or “functional imperfection”. In classical Indian philosophical and Ayurvedic texts, doshas does not refer to violations of moral law, but rather to systemic imbalances—whether in the body, soul, or cosmos (see: Larson & Bhattacharya, Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophy).

In this sense, sinful does not mean being ethically criminal, but rather experiencing existential dysfunction: there is something out of harmony in the self-order. It is closer to the concept of “mental illness” than “legal crime”. This perspective is in line with modern existential philosophy which views human crisis not simply as moral error, but ontological alienation (Heidegger, Existence and Time).

Thus, sin in its initial phase is a language of self-reflection, not a language of condemnation.

Reward as “Fruit”, Not “Points”

Say present comes from Sanskrit porridgewhich means “fruit” or “natural product”. In the tradition of karmic philosophy (karma-phala), every action plants a cause, and reality will harvest its effects organically. There is no mechanism of personal punishment, no moral administration; there is only the cosmic law of cause and effect.

This meaning places morality in natural law, not in transcendental bureaucracy. Humans do good because of spiritual ecological awareness: good gives birth to good, bad gives birth to bad (see: Radhakrishnan, Indian Philosophy).

Here, the reward is not a score, not a number, not a digital point—but the fruit of life that grows from the quality of action and inner awareness.

Islam Nusantara and Spiritual Accounting Metaphors

When Islam entered the archipelago, a semantic and theological transformation occurred. Local concepts were absorbed into the framework of monotheism and Islamic theology. Islam introduced the concept reckoning (calculation), pee (scales), kittb al-o’m (charity notebook), and ḥisab al-ākhirah (afterlife calculation).

In this phase:

  • Sin changes from an “existential defect” to a “moral debt.”
  • Merit changes from “natural fruit” to “spiritual asset”.

The relationship between humans and God begins to be understood through an administrative metaphor: there are record keeping, moral audits, calculations, balance sheets, and evaluations. The angels Raqib and Atid become symbols of divine bureaucracy. Spirituality moves from “self-care” to “keeping track.”

This is not just a change in language, but a change in religious thinking (religious epistemology). As stated by Talal Asad in Religious GenealogyReligion not only shapes faith, but also social ways of thinking and structures of meaning.

Reward Capitalization as an Investment in Modern Spirituality

In the modern era, especially in capitalistic society, the concept of reward has shifted again: from a “spiritual asset” to an “investment instrument”. Terms like investment in the afterlife, productive charityAnd return the reward represents economic logic entering the spiritual realm.

Religious narratives are starting to use financial language:

  • “Alms 1 million, return 10 million”
  • “Almsgiving as passive income in the afterlife”

Reward becomes a symbolic commodity. Worship becomes a transaction. Spirituality turns into calculation. This phenomenon is in line with Max Weber’s criticism of the rationalization of inner religion The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.

Religion is no longer just a way of character formation, but a system of moral efficiency.

Back to the Roots: Planting, Not Counting

Philosophical reflection brings us to a fundamental realization: the essence of spirituality is not accumulation, but transformation. Not calculations, but growth.

If sin is a defect, then the primary focus is not counting the fault, but healing the inner structure. If the reward is fruit, then the main thing is not the quantity of the harvest, but the quality of the tree.

As in Aristotelian ethics (virtue ethics), morality is not a matter of reward and punishment, but the formation of character (Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics). In Islamic Sufism, the focus is not the accumulation of merit, but tazkiyatun nafs (purification of the soul) and award (awareness of God’s presence).

True spirituality is not about balance, but about self-quality.

Sin and reward are not just theological terms. It is a mirror of the way humans interpret life, themselves and God. From existential defects, natural fruits, moral administration, to spiritual investments—all show that religion is always in dialogue with culture, economics, and social structures.

The question is no longer: how much merit do we accumulate? However: what kind of people are we developing?

Because healthy trees are not busy counting their fruit. He was busy growing.
And from that growth the fruit will come by itself. What do you think sin and reward mean to you?

Hope it is useful. Wallohu a’lam.
